One Year Ending. New Year Beginning. Time Flying! Got a Minute?

by Dr. Rick Kirschner on December 30, 2011

To My Much Appreciated Blog Reader:

Happy 2012!

Got a minute?  I’ll keep this short.   It’s my last blog post for 2011, and I will leave it posted until next year.  As this year winds down and next year winds up, everyone of us is trying to unwind while getting more done in less time. It’s a big challenge, keeping up with the pace of these crazy times.

You can actually feel the time pressure when you listen to how people talk about time.   “Time to get moving.”  “Time waits for no one.”  “Racing the clock.” “There’s never enough time.”   “Pressed for time.”   “Time flies when you’re having fun.”

Wouldn’t it be terrific if you could take what  spare time you have, and put it in a daylight savings account?  Or at least in a ‘Time Share’?  Then, whenever you needed a little extra time, you could go get some!

But it doesn’t work that way.

While almost everyone has time to spare, somehow, too many fail to spare the time to bring life to their work, instead exchanging their life for their work.  In such an unhappy circumstance, the only choice in the spare time is to try and forget how awful the rest of their time is.

When you’re not working, are you using the rest of your time for activities that succeed only at killing time?   For those who have no time to spare for truly living, there’s a terrible price.  Because without joy, without meaning, without motivation, life all too easily becomes a relentless cycle of eat, work, eat, work, eat, watch TV, sleep, start again.  To quote Bob Newhart, in his comedy about 5 minute therapy, “STOP IT!”  or said another way, “TIME OUT!”

The truth about time is that there is no better time than the present to appreciate that your life happens on YOUR time, and there’s no better moment than this one to live it.   To be more fully human, you’ve got to spend more time in this moment, today, tomorrow, and the years that follow.  You are called a human being instead of a human doing, because the reality of life is happening only in this moment.  Considering that there are no guarantees of anything you desire  ever coming to pass, the only moment in which happiness is even a possibility is this one!  That means, if you want to be happy, you’ve got to learn to be happy with life as it is, right now.

If you do stop and smell the roses, do remember to look around once in a while so you don’t miss it, and you do find value in reading my blog posts, then right here, right now, there’s something I want to say to you!

THANK YOU!  Thank you for your continued readership and encouragment, whether it’s via public comments, or private ones, whether it’s on my blog, or on my web site, whether you’ve liked my Facebook fan page, or you consider yourself a friend as you read my personal Facebook posts.

THANK YOU!  Thank you for an awesome 2011, and thanks in advance for coming back and bringing your friends and associates with you in 2012!   I wish for you and yours a persistent moment of being here now no matter what time or day it is, a moment full and rich with possibility.  And here’s to a healthy and abundant new year, in which all good things accrue to you, in which what you give away freely comes back to you multiplied, pressed down and running over.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!  (See you next year!)
