You Can Not Not Influence People

Insider's Guide To The Art of PersuasionNo matter how hard you try, you  cannot not influence people.

Yes, I know. That’s a double negative, and as we’ve all been taught, two negatives make a positive. The point is that you constantly influence people with the things you say and don’t say, do and don’t do, and even what you think or don’t think about them, because your influence on you is one of the primary drivers of your influence on others. In fact, the only way to have no influence with someone is if one of you is no longer alive!   Even then, you may have lingering influence.  But assuming that both you and the person you seek to persuade are alive, you most assuredly have enough influence to begin building it and using it.

Every time you ask a question or make a statement to someone, you are participating in his or her thought process. That’s because every question you ask, and every statement you make, intervenes into the thought process and/or feeling state of the person with whom you interact.  That has a consequence.  And so, in this way, you can and do shape the thoughts of others, which shapes their reactions.

Key takeaway today:  You always have influence! So put to rest any idea that you don’t. Instead, notice the influence that you do have, the responses that you do get. And if you don’t like what you’re getting, change what you’re doing to get something different!

What surprising influence have you discovered you have in your life?    Your comments and feedback are welcome.
Be well
